During the 212th session of the UNESCO Executive Board, which takes place from 6 to 20 October 2021 at Headquarters in Paris, the meeting of the Committee on Non-Governmental Partners (NGP) held on Friday 8, considered the renewal of the associate status of 59 NGO partners of UNESCO, including WFEO, with a favorable advice given by the Director General.
The WFEO associate status with UNESCO was renewed for 8 years until 2029.
All debates can be followed online via webcast links, which will be available on the UNESCO Executive Board website.
WFEO is a close partner of UNESCO in the field of engineering, regularly providing qualitative knowledge and sharing its expertise. Its cooperation has been framed by two agreements covering the period 2009-2015 and 2016-2024.
Between 2014 and 2018, WFEO was a member of the STEM and Gender Advancement (SAGA) Advisory Committee and participated in the draft of its 2018 report. After a successful cooperation in the framework of the 2019 World Engineering Convention, both organizations are currently preparing the 2023 edition of the Convention with the aims of enhancing UNESCO initiatives especially for women in STEM.
In March 2018, UNESCO and WFEO signed a joint Declaration for the celebration of WFEO’s 50th anniversary, which expresses the commitment of both signatories to advance the SDGs through engineering and acknowledge engineering as a crucial means to build a sustainable world.
WFEO also worked with UNESCO in drafting the Second UNESCO Engineering Report (2019-2020), including as member of the Advisory and Steering Committees of the Report.
WFEO has also provided support in several UNESCO’s celebrations. Since 2014, it helped carry out Africa Engineering Week, and supported the proposal to proclaim 4 March the World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development (approved in 2019).
