WFEO & ICSI webinar to celebrate World Engineering Day 2024 – Inspiring collective action through communication, advocacy and best practices – the role of engineers

The WFEO Working Group on Climate Change , the International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure (ICSI) and the WFEO Committee on Young Engineers / Future Leaders Working Group on Climate Action organized the webinar entitled “Inspiring collective action through communication, advocacy and best practices – the role of engineers” in celebration of the World Engineering Day on 14th March 2024.

As the global community grapples with the escalating impacts of climate change, fostering widespread understanding and engagement across all levels of stakeholder is vital.

This event demonstrated the pivotal role that engineers play in addressing climate-related challenges, and how they can help to communicate challenges and solutions to key players such as local communities, policymakers and investors.

Discussions emphasized the importance of tailored communication strategies, highlighting successful case studies and best practices that effectively resonate with different audiences. In an era of information overload, finding methods to convey the urgency of climate action is essential for mobilizing all stakeholders across the value chain towards sustainable practices.

Moreover, speakers at this event talked to responsibility of engineers in leading community education efforts. Functioning as integral members of interdisciplinary teams, engineers are uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between technical innovations and community needs.

There was also a focus on advocacy for sustainable and resilient infrastructure that is fit for the future, our communities and the planet, and how engineers can help to influence investment and unlock funding, through education and communication.

The webinar also showcased a global project on the collection, consolidation and communication of national climate change mitigation efforts related to engineering.

Finally, we heared about ICSI and WFEO’s Engineering Change Campaign. The campaign is a powerful communication approach to demonstrate how young engineers, in particular, are instrumental in driving the urgent changes we need – they will determine how engineering firms address issues of sustainability and resilience in years to come.

This event served as a platform for the engineering community to share best practices, advocate for and inspire collective action towards a more sustainable and resilient future.
