The WFEO Standing Technical Committee on Information and Communication (WFEO-CIC) hosted by the Institution of Engineers, India (IEI) partnered with the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) to host the International Seminar on Internet of Things (IoT) on 13th May in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The seminar attracted more than 200 engineering and IT experts from Malaysia and 9 other nations.
The Guest of Honour, Hon. Deputy Minister, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) Malaysia, YB Datuk Dr. Abu Bakar bin Mohamed Diah, noted in his Opening Speech that IoT is on the country’s agenda as Science, Technology and Innovation agenda to accelerate development.
WFEO Executive Vice-President Dr. Peter Greenwood and WFEO President Elect Dr. Marlene Kanga provided background to WFEO and its activities and the work being done to progress the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Vice President of WFEO and chair of the WFEO-CIC, Mr. S.S.Rathore, expressed in his Opening Address that the WFEO CIC will be making efforts to spread the knowledge concerning Information and Communication Technology (ICT) so that more and more people, engineers in particular, understand why and how ICT can help in transferring the industrial / agricultural societies into information society.
WFEO-CIC is trying to make contributions to improving Internet governance so that the Internet can be more trustable, more securable, more peaceful, and more constructive to human beings.
The President of IEI, Mr. Navin Vasoya, mentioned that the IEI is strived to contribute to information technology for sustainable development, skills and careers, innovation in Emerging Economies, information technologies for smart cities, Inclusive Growth, Women and Girls, and Big Data Analytics.
The President of IEM, Ir. Tan Yean Chin welcomed all overseas delegates to the seminar to share ideas and potential collaboration. Internet of Things (IoT) is a rising topic of technical, social, and economic implication.
The Invited Keynote Address was delivered by academician Dato’ Ir. Lee Yee Cheong on “Rise of the South, Digital Technologies” and the impact of digital technologies on these developing economies.

Mr. R. Srinivasan, the Vice President & Head of Smart World Communication Business Unit on the implementation of smart cities technologies presented “Internet of Things in Smart Cities”,

Mr Sanjeev Malhotra from Nasscom India on the development of innovation eco-systems to support start-ups with digital solutions, presented “IoT: Landscape and Nasscom Initiatives”

Ir Eddy Cheah, spoke about the energy saving impact in SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) monitoring with his presentation “SCADA technology and the Internet of Things (IoT)” and

Mr. Jaimin Shah (MD & CEO of Dev InfoTech, India), spoke about the new digital technologies being developed for 3-D imaging and presented “Business Opportunities and Challenges in IoT”.
The presentations highlighted the diversity of applications of the internet of things and the impact thee are having in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The IoT International seminar was a powerful and inspirational event that successfully brought together industry representatives, makers, vendors, experts, developers and others to plan, learn, network, collaborate, strategize and more effectively tap into the immense potential of the IoT domain. The partnership by IEI and IEM was a great example of the benefits of collaboration to demonstrate the potential of ICT to develop sustainable solutions for a better world.
