On May 6, 2022, The WFEO Committee on Young Engineers / Future Leaders (YE/FL) – Working Group on SDG#13 “Climate Action” presented the Side event on “Preparing the Future Engineering Workforce to Achieve the SDGs Through Multi-Stakeholder Engagement” at the UN STI Forum.
The side event explored how to bridge the gaps between private sector, academia and civil society to better prepare young engineers for careers in sustainable development. The side event provided space for a range of stakeholders to showcase educational opportunities or workforce development programs that help early-career engineers align their work with the Sustainable Development Goals.
At the UN STI Forum’s Side event, two of the YEFL Members from the Working Group, presented the work that has been done since inception and how it related to the side event topic. Pulkit Kanotra and Michaela Chan, initially discussed the Working Group’s role in Climate Action and how it pertains to SDG 13. Pulkit Kanotra, showcased the YEFL effort with creating a global network for young engineers to discuss and knowledge share ideas and strategies to mitigate effects from climate change. Pulkit, also presented the YEFL Working Group’s efforts at COP26 and the positive response it received. Michaela presented on the future plans for the Working Group.
Following the group presentations, Pulkit and Michaela responded to questions by the moderators and provided insight into industry standards and practices as pertaining to SDGs.
Overall, the experience was a very engaging and reassuring insight into the academic, engineering and policymaking world and how each industry is tackling the issues. The multi-faceted approach to the SDG’s and specifically climate action is a necessary one and conversations like these are important to advancement of solutions to the climate crisis.
